Men in Bradford district and Craven asked ‘what are your stats?’

Men across Bradford district and Craven are being asked if they ‘know their stats’ as part of Men’s Health Week, taking place from 10 to 16 June 2019. Most men know the stats for their favourite sports team or the date they passed their driving test, but not the key stats about their own health.

One man in every five will die before they reach retirement at the age of 65, but being aware of a few key figures can make all the difference.

The initiative from the Men’s Health Forum is being backed by NHS Bradford district and Craven clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) who are keen to get more men thinking about their health and wellbeing.

There are seven key numbers that all men need to know – 37, 150, 5, 14, 10, 120/80 and 75.

The risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer are increased by having a waist size of more than 37 inches. People can reduce this risk by aiming for 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week, this means exercise which makes you slightly breathless such as walking faster.

Eating 5 portions of fruit or vegetables every day and limiting alcohol intake to no more than 14 units per week (or seven pints of average strength 4% lager) will all have an impact on physical health.

Blood pressure is one of the best ways for people to know if their body is in good physical shape. A normal blood pressure for a man is 120/80. People often don’t realise that high blood pressure doesn’t just mean poor heart health, it can also lead to issues such as erectile dysfunction. GP surgeries offer health checks which include measuring blood pressure and many pharmacies now offer this service.

If you smoke, you are likely to die 10 years younger than somebody who doesn’t smoke.

Good health also means good mental health, but three out of four people who take their own lives (75%) are men. Men in unskilled work are three times more likely to die by suicide than men who work in management.

Dr Graham Sanderson, GP and clinical lead, NHS Bradford district and Craven CCGs said: “Men aren’t always great at making their own health a priority and that includes their mental health. We often get a lot of messages about what is good and bad, which can be confusing, but I would urge men to learn these seven numbers - 37, 150, 5, 14, 10, 120/80, 75. Knowing these numbers will help men realise when they may need to get some additional support to allow them to live well.

“There is lots of information available on the NHS website – www.nhs.uk – including details of support services and what to do if you are concerned about your health. Alternatively, if you are between the ages of 40-75 it’s really important to book in for your free NHS Health Check. It’s all about helping people spot the early signs of developing conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.”
